Blanton’s single barrel bourbon

The blanton’s single barrel bourbon is a masterpiece. It is not retail packaging that is quite attractive, with a racehorse on the top of the bottle, a rustic-looking label, and a round center that gives the bottle an almost spherical shape and a distinctive appearance.

Every single one of the barrels used to make Blantons single barrel bourbon is aged in Buffalo Trace’s metal-walled, heat-trapped warehouse. As a result, the whiskey ages at a faster rate. Believe it or not, up until just a few years, it was relatively easy to buy a bottle of Blanton’s any time of the year.

Fast forward to today, and you wouldn’t be faulted for thinking Blanton’s is the hardest bourbon to find anywhere. Slowly over time, its position has been elevated to one of the hottest bourbons in the marketplace, with stores being bombarded with calls on a daily basis and people talking about Blanton’s as if it’s the best bourbon currently being produced.

This original king of single barrel bourbon holds a fond place in many bourbon drinkers’ hearts. With each bottle adorned with a topper that displays an individual letter and a horse in a different race position and some bottles in a case of Blanton’s housed inside a colored felt bag and fancy box, the brand feels special.

Fun packaging gimmicks aside, what makes Blanton’s bourbon single barrel so unique is its consistency. In a world where single barrels can vary widely, Blanton’s tends to always deliver a consistently solid pour year over year. It has never been the best, and also quite far from the worst.

Filled with a bouquet of honey, vanilla, light bubble gum, and orange citrus peel opens things up. Lying gently beneath are hints of barrel char and toasted sugars that tussle with floral notes. Not forgetting Light cinnamon and baking spices that top things off. All these scents are nuanced and inviting, creating a satisfying opening to open the sip.

While the palate hits with an initial sweetness, housing notable flavors of light caramel, honey, muted vanilla, and brown sugar. And underneath lies the opening flavors of leather, charred oak, and rye spice, which bubbles to the top. The flavor combination is solid, owing to the fact that they all play together very well and demonstrate more of a bourbon flavor profile.

A crisp finish rounds out the sip with vanilla, caramel, leather, dry oak, rye spice, and light peppercorn. There’s a pleasing sweet heat that lingers once all the other flavors fade. While it’s not as strong as the parts that preceded it, the finish nevertheless makes for an overall nice capstone for the sip.

blanton’s bourbon whiskey

Blanton’s bourbon is one of the most elusive bottles in the whiskey industry. It was the first bourbon to be commercially mass-marketed as a Single Barrel product, meaning each bottling batch of Blanton’s whiskey is produced from the contents of only one particular barrel and not a blend of multiple barrels.

When you first pour Blanton’s bourbon into your glass and take a swig, you’ll notice its color is a delicate mix of chestnut and oloroso sherry like the gold and red hues of a fall sunset. If you drink it out of the bottle, you won’t get that color. The reason is that this bourbon has spent nearly a decade in its barrel.

Blanton’s Single Barrel bourbon looks much different than others because it contains an additional step after distillation and before bottling, and this finishing process is referred to as “seasoning.”There are 7 different core varieties of Blanton’s Bourbon, and the first would be Blanton’s Original.

This whiskey is an Original Single Barrel Bourbon that was introduced in 1984 and bottled at 93 Proof, and even up to date it is still produced. We also have the Blanton’s Gold or “Blanton’s Gold Edition” which is the second Blanton’s Bourbon label to be introduced to the Blanton’s line.

And next would be the Blanton’s Special Reserve or Blanton’s Green Label, which is bottled at 80 Proof, 40% ABV. Furthermore, there is also Blanton’s Straight from the Barrel which was introduced to Blanton’s lineup in 2003 and developed specifically for the French market where the market required a more ‘gastronomic’ Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

As the name suggests Blanton’s Straight from the Barrel is bottled at cask strength, without dilution or chill filtering. Being both a single barrel and a barrel-proof bourbon the ABV of bottles vary in the rage between 61.15% and 64.8% ABV. Also not leave out the Blanton’s Black Label made exclusively for the Japanese market, bottled at 80 Proof, 40% ABV and sold in 75cl bottles.
First, the nose doesn’t speak of liquor on the younger side.

Instead, you get whiffs of caramel and wood as well as a touch of sweetness that brings to mind cherry soda. The overall aroma is sweet, but not in an artificial or syrupy way. There’s also a hint of bourbon spice, likely from the oak barrel the whiskey was aged in.

The fruitiness of this bourbon is supported by a light peppermint flavor from the higher rye content, and hints of dark tobacco and a little more wood. The different elements of the fragrance are revealed by swirling, and when you sip there are hints of vanilla, orange, savory, and sweet caramel fudge that blows your mind away.

These are intermingled with the scent of lightly roasted wood and corn. Its flavor starts with sweet caramel and vanilla, which feels like cotton candy-flavored. There’s a fuller flavor to it than you’d expect, and the alcohol flavor is mild but noticeable. Take a deeper taste, and the bourbon swoops across your palate like a swallow of piping hot, smoky peppery rye spice.

And all around that, you’ll find hints of rosemary and a hint of cocoa powder; on your tongue, you’ll taste every spice-grilled chipotle pepper that went into the process.

Blanton’s Whiskey

Blanton’s whiskey is made from carefully selected ingredients and matured in a warehouse with its own heating system to control aging even in winter. Each barrel is selected at its peak maturity by the master distiller and is hand bottled, one barrel at a time. The bottle is a decanter style with a racing horse and rider on the stopper.

Letters on each of the set of eight stoppers spell out the name ‘BLANTON’S’. The first stopper whiskey in the set, the letter ‘B’, depicts the horse standing still. The subsequent letters depict the horse entering a trot, canter, and gallop. Special Reserve is said to be around six years old. Distillery Information

Blanton’s bourbon was named in honor of one of the distillery’s early leaders, Albert B. Blanton, who the company claims spent most of his life preserving the tradition of handcrafted bourbon. Blanton worked at the facility now known as the Buffalo Trace Distillery for approximately 55 years. He was born and raised on a farm just outside Frankfort, Kentucky, and he began working at the distillery (then called the O.F.C. Distillery) in 1897 as an office boy when he was 16 years old. He was appointed superintendent of the distillery, its warehouse, and bottling shop – at the same time that the distillery was renamed to become the George T. Stagg Distillery. He became president of the whiskey plant in 1921. Blanton died in 1959.
